Build Your Own Batter
Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: Argonne Lab In this activity, students will work in groups of 4-5 to learn the basics of building a battery using everyday materials. Student groups will then conduct a series of small experiments in order to design and create an optimal battery to power a small audio device. LED Greeting Cards
Grades: 3-5
By: Northwestern University Students will have a chance to design and create a light-up greeting card in a blend of design and arts. In order for the card to work students will have to successfully create an LED circuit. Students will be able to take their art home with them along with their new electrical engineering skills! Mystery Box Activity
Grades: K-2
By: Christie Wylie Students determine the contents of a "mystery" box by making observations and inferences. Edison Programmable Robot Lab
Grades: K-2
By: Computer Explorers Meet Edison! Students will explore robotics as they work with Edison, the LEGO® compatible, programmable Bot! Students will use barcodes to program Edison to do everything from making music to 'battling"" in the Sumo ring! Combining the versatility of the robotics with Intuitive Drag and drop PROGRAMMING software, this adventure encourages teamwork and fosters imagination and creativity. Techstars: Physical Programming with Micro:Bit New!!
Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: Computer Explorers The BBC micro:bit is a pocket-sized computer that you can code, customize and control to bring your digital ideas, games and apps to life. The microbit is a powerful mini-computer! Students will see their code come to life in a physical and tactile environment. They will create emoticon displays, games, messages, light and music. How To Become a Marketing Ninja
Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: Kathleen Hansen Learn how to get the word out about your product or service and create your own marketing campaign plan for a fun, successful launch! Startup 101Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: Retriever (Samuel Kim) & Matthew Price All the steps you need to take to create your own business! Missions to Mars - Mars Generation
Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: College of Lake County Instructor will seek to stimulate interest in STEM by incorporating hands-on laser/photonics/optics activities and will link the presentation to current district curriculum. Note: need desk lamps, and magnetic white board. |
Improv Playhouse
Grades: 4-5
By: Improv Playhouse A blast for all the students, but more than learning the forms of “Whose line…” our students participate in the games of theater that nurture skills in character development, spontaneity, giving and taking focus and ensemble (team-work) building. Mock Up Session
Grades: 3-5
By: Northwestern University We will be running an engineering design game called "Mockups" with students. Students are placed into teams and then asked to brainstorm a product based on design constraints that they draw from a deck of cards. For example, students may draw cards that ask them to design a vacuum cleaner for superheroes that doesn't contain any plastic. They then come up with their ideas, build simple models out of office supplies (if there is time), and share their ideas with the audience for feedback. Sylvan Math Edge
Grades: 3-5 & 6-8
By: Sylvan Sylvan's Math Edge provides structured and systematic skill practice across a deep portfolio of content in math using an engaging digital platform. Edge aligns to and models the problems that students see in school and during assessment. Math Edge is designed to help students have fun, increase accuracy, accelerate learning, and build confidence to successfully apply the practiced skills in real life and in ongoing STEM learning. Students work independently within a fun, engaging environment. A skilled Edge teacher helps direct students to the in-app support resources and celebrates their successes. Groups of Math Edge students have practices scheduled at the same time to bring peer group energy to their experience. Intro to Brush Calligraphy
Grades: 7-8
By: Things Unseen Design Dabble in the world of calligraphy by using brush markers. You can apply this skill to creating handmade greeting cards, designing wall art, and taking your journaling to the next level. Join Audrey Ko of Things Unseen Designs to learn how she uses calligraphy to create unique greeting cards, wedding invitations, and more. Touchdown: Designing a shock absorbing system!
Grades: K-2
By: Astha Battad & Sandhya Raman In this challenge, students will use what they know and can investigate about gravity, motion, and forces to design and build a shock-absorbing system that will protect two "astronauts" when they land. Just as engineers had to develop solutions for landing different vehicle types on the moon and Mars, students will follow the engineering design process to design and build a shock-absorbing system out of paper, straws, and mini-marshmallows; attach their shock absorber to a cardboard platform; and improve their design based on testing results. Medical Jeopardy!
Grades: 6-8
By: Cancer Treatment Centers of America Join CTCA for a game based on the popular TV show with a health care and cancer focus. |
Terrariums: A Hands-On Exploration of Nature
Grades: K-2 & 3-5
By: Stevenson PREP Join the staff of Stevenson High School's Camp Patriot to learn about environmental science with a hands-on experiment. Build and observe the interactions in our natural world by creating your own terrarium! We'll talk about the process, the ecosystem you'll build, and the similarities to the world around us. All materials are provided. Civil Engineering Is Around You
By: Gewalt Hamilton Associates
Civil Engineering is all around you! | House of Cards (K 3–5) Imagine building the tallest building, constructing a bridge across a large river, or bringing clean water into an entire town. These are just some of the many examples that civil engineering can offer. If civil engineering interests you, please attend our session where we will design, build and test a house made from cards! We will also discuss the different disciplines of civil engineering and Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. Civil Engineering is all around you! | Paper Bridge (K 6–8) Have you ever traveled over a bridge? Driven on a highway? Seen a dam? Been in a skyscraper? If you answered yes to any of those, then you have witnessed civil engineering. These are just some of the many examples within civil engineering that can be explored. If civil engineering interests you, please attend our session where we will design, build and test your bridge made from paper! We will also discuss the different disciplines of civil engineering and Gewalt Hamilton Associates, Inc. Computer Programming & Robotics - Code Your Own Game
